Description
This is a beautiful antique iced water pitcher, made by Rogers Smith & Company, Meridien CT, which dates it to the latter 1800's.The bottom is marked Rogers Smith & Co., Meridien CT, Quadruple and numbered 193 USA. There is also a hand engraved marking, hard to see in pic. It looks like Ice (in cursive) and a check score mark and xx. This is the pitcher only, no stand.
The reason these were made was for holding iced water and they were very heavy so the pitcher was cradled in a stand which enabled someone to tilt the pitcher and pour the iced water without having to lift it. The pitcher alone weighs 5 pounds,9 oz with no packaging.
I polished it until I ran out of silver polish. There is a very interesting scene on the pour spout (pics 5,6). It was very prestigious to own one of these and they were sometimes given as presentation pieces.
Very cool antique piece, and beautiful as it is!
