Handsome English Silver-Plate Pitcher Vase Jug - 1890-1920 - Will Polish Shiny. This old jug has an unusual form, in that it’s made like a pitcher but has no defined lip for pouring. It may have had a large cork fitted at the top, or perhaps a second piece that would have allowed for more accurate pouring. It’s rugged character and well worn appearance makes for either a striking table piece or vase. Being silver-plated, it will also take on a brilliant shine with careful polishing. For now, the patina gives it the appearance of pewter.
The piece has a great many scratches, slight deformation of the pouring spout and a noticeable dent in the bottom rim. It’s not a show pony, but a proud survivor! The bottom is marked with generic stamps that likely signify little. The stamp “England” indicates it was made after 1890, when the American McKinley Tariff Act required all imports to bear the name of the source country. In 1921, the law was updated to require imported pieces to expand the mark to include “Made In.”
